A Session Border Controller, or SBC for short, is a major component of telecommunication service providers. For end users, this equipment piece is rarely visible. It is, however, an essential element of the complete solution to provide a solid experience for VoIP unified communications<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The main roles of SBCs are to secure and control SIP networks (Session Initiation Protocol) used by VoIP applications such as unified communications. SBCs are, by definition, installed at the network\u2019s border<\/em> in a service provider\u2019s data center.<\/p>\n

The foremost reason that telecommunication service providers use an SBC is to secure its VoIP network. As with any IP network, there exist risks of unwanted intrusions, or hacking<\/em>. Among some of the most common attacks are DDoS and IP spoofing.<\/p>\n

Although often less regarded, the role of a Session Border Controller is to improve the reliability of telecommunication service providers networks providing VoIP unified communications. Because SBCs provide real-time computational services such as SIP translation, intelligent routing and QoS (Quality of Service), they allow offloading other network components.<\/p>\n

Offloading certain tasks while processing others increase network reliability while also providing scalability to handle increased traffic.<\/p>\n

Professionalism<\/h1>\n

The use of Session Border Controllers by telecommunication service providers is proof of their seriousness, professionalism and expertise. However, there still exists several industry suppliers that do not use a telco grade SBC.<\/p>\n
